THE WEIGHT OF AIR

An installation designed as a pop-up travel agency. This time, Saluti e Baci focuses on Air Quality.
During the performance. I would sit inside, ready to welcome travelers from the audience who could approach the desk and request a trip to any destination in the world.

Inside the structure, visitors can delve into detailed information about air pollution and the innovative methods used to measure it.

As quick as possible, I’d use black ink on vibrant colored paper to create a unique postcard for each traveler.

This personalized postcard is then handed to them, along with a boarding pass that details the travel destination, date, time, ticket number, and the real-time pollution level at that location.

The completed drawings and postcards are displayed on the structure, creating a colorful and informative tapestry of global destinations and their pollution levels.

Meanwhile, the boarding pass serves as a signed and numbered keepsake for the audience, a tangible reminder of their imaginative journey. A limited edition artist screenprint.

The color of the paper I draw on directly corresponds to the pollution level of the chosen location, providing an immediate and striking visual representation of global pollution levels.

All drawings made in about 120 seconds with ink derived from pollutant emissions on colored paper 21x29.7 cm.

The entire installation is crafted from recycled or upcycled materials and adorned with black ink produced from actual pollution emissions.

A few modifications were necessary to adapt the sets from old shows.

PEOPLE HAVE TRAVELLED TO:

POSTCARD COLLECTION

In a not so distant time, when we were traveling or on the occasion of important events and anniversaries, there was a gesture that each of us performed almost spontaneously: sending a postcard.

It was a way of communicating to the recipient that he/she was important to us and that it was in our thoughts during pleasant moments.

Sending a postcard had a completely different weight: those who received it knew that on the other hand an "effort" and a commitment had been made.

The project aims to reflect on the speed of news nowadays and the potential of the postcard as a physical communicating object.

The postcard bringing news thus becomes a memory (a past event), a celebration (a social victory or improvement), warning (send your postcard to a negationist!) or request (send it as a petition to your petty politicians).

SEND IT!
Pick your favourite postcards from the collection. New postcards will be release periodically.

Don’t forget recipient address and message at checkout.

I’ll personally send for you the printed postcard to the desired destinations: siblings, friends, lovers, negationists or your petty  politicians.

LOCATIONS
The Venice Lagoon is a fragile artificial environment that the interventions of the Serenissima Republic, managing natural phenomena (as the fate of any lagoon is either to silt up or become part of the sea), have been able to maintain in balance for a millennium, providing the only fragile guarantee of the city's survival. If Venice is still partly protected by its Lagoon today, it is due to the wise conservation policies of the Serenissima, which always prioritized the survival of the Lagoon. The Red Forest is the 10-square-kilometer (4 sq mi) area surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plantwithin the Exclusion Zone located in Polesia. The name "Red Forest" comes from the ginger-brown color of the pine trees after they died following the absorption of high levels of radiation from the Chernobyl accident on 26 April 1986. The site of the Red Forest remains one of the most contaminated areas in the world today.
As humans were evacuated from the area in 1986, animals moved in despite the radiation. The flora and fauna of the Red Forest have been dramatically affected by the accident. However, it seems that the biodiversity of the Red Forest has increased in the years following the disaster.

The MV Wakashio oil spill occurred offshore of Pointe d'Esny, south of Mauritius, after the Japanese bulk carrier Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef on 25 July 2020. The ship began to leak fuel oil in the following weeks, and broke apart in mid August. Although much of the oil on board was pumped out before she broke in half, an estimated 1,000 tonnes of oil spilled into the ocean in what was called by some scientists the worst environmental disaster ever in Mauritius. Two weeks after the incident, the Mauritian government declared the incident a national emergency.

What is AQI ? An air quality index (AQI) is an indicator developed by government agencies to communicate to the public how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become.  As air pollution levels rise, so does the AQI, along with the associated public health risk.
